A Workshop for Parents of Children with Autism

Autism is a developmental condition that affects a child’s ability to communicate and interact with those around. In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of children being diagnosed with autism. Unfortunately, trained therapists who can provide the teaching which is so important in bringing about improvement in the child’s condition, are not easily available. Therefore the burden of teaching falls on the parents, who often feel unsure and overwhelmed with this responsibility.

Aarambh, is a training program conducted by Sethu, specifically designed for parents whose children have been recently diagnosed with autism, to give them the knowledge and skills required to teach their children.
The 2 day parent training workshop will be conducted on 10th and 17th January 2009 from 2-5 pm. The following topics will be covered:
Understanding Autism
Handling Challenging Behaviors.
Moving from Play to Communication

The resource persons for the workshop are a speech therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist and developmental pediatrician. The training will include discussions, lectures, videos and various skills will be demonstrated to help parents manage challenging behaviours & develop effective communication, with the eventual aim of making their children more socially competent.
