The Training Program

Sethu believes in sharing knowledge and skills with everyone who works with children. Therefore our training programs are a major thrust area of our work.

Workshops

A wide range of training programs (lectures and workshops) are available for parents, teachers & other professionals on a variety of topics, as listed below. Requests for workshops can be made by contacting Michelle at Sethu Centre (ph: 6513749)

  • Discipline without Tears: Covers the reasons for children's misbehavior & how to deal with this in an effective and mutually respectful manner
  • Building Self-esteem: Deals with what is meant by self-esteem & ways to increase it
  • Sibling Rivalry: Helps parents to enhance the relationship between brothers & sisters
  • Understanding Children's Feelings: Guides carers of children on the importance of feelings, their link to behavior & how to deal with difficult situations
  • Introduction to Specific Learning Disability: Information given about why children fail in school and what can be done to help
  • Phonological Awareness in Children: Deals with the importance of phonological awareness in the development of reading & spelling
  • Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Information on the causes and management of hyperactivity in children
  • Childhood Sexuality: Information to help carers of children understand the development of sexuality in children and teach them how to keep themselves safe
  • Understanding Adolescence: Helps teachers & parents to understand, cope with and even enjoy living with teenagers
  • Children and TV: Encourages parents to teach their children critical TV viewing skills and regain control of the remote!
  • Marriages May End But Parenting Lasts Forever: Guides single parents to care for their children through the difficult times of separation and divorce and encourages better communication between parents despite the situation of conflict
  • Experimath: Teaches parents how to promote understanding and a love for Mathematics in their children, through the use of the Universal Active Maths method. Topics in the primary school curriculum such as number concept, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication are covered


Gnyandeep

The "lamp of knowledge" is being handed over to teachers through Gnyandeep, that aims to educate preschool teachers on developmentally appropriate and enjoyable teaching methods. We are very grateful to The Erach & Roshan Sadri Foundation which is generously supporting this program. Gnyandeep runs thrice weekly over a period of 6 months. The next training course will commence in June 2010. Teachers will be trained on topics such as child development, curriculum and special needs.

The course has been designed in modules and teachers are welcome to attend the sessions as per their choice. The various units are: Child Development, Principles of Learning, Phonological Awareness & Phonics, Reading, Writing, Maths, Art, Music and Rhythm, Dramatics, Self-Help skills, Teaching the Child with Special Needs, Working with parents and Classroom management.
